OUR RESPONSE: Sustainable Neighbourhood Development
The scales of sustainable development and sustainable living range from a global context to national, regional, municipal, community, neighbourhood and building scales. Responsibility for each scale falls to various levels of the public and private sectors. Within this spectrum, it is essential that sustainable neighbourhood development encompasses Site, Parcel, Building and Component scales.
Although sustainable development solutions are ultimately resolved within the broader global and national contexts, it is at the neighbourhood scale that sustainable development and sustainable living converge and sustainable neighbourhoods can be implemented.
This is the scale at which public interests are transferred to private interests and greater responsibility falls to the individual. Achieving the vision and goals of a sustainable neighbourhood plan — no matter how technically sound or innovative — requires committed, positive resident buy-in and participation in order to succeed.
